Artist Creates Massive Hot Air Balloon Using Thousands of Plastic Bags

Artist Tomás Saraceno is known for making a statement — one that hopefully will get the human population thinking more about the environment.

Saraceno’s latest art installation, Becoming Aerosolar, transforms thousands of plastic bags into a patchwork, solar-powered hot air balloon.

The tent-like structure inflates into a gigantic bubble that people can walk into and wander through. When vacant and heated by the sun, it floats into the air.

Like most of the artist’s previous aerial work, Becoming Aerosolar imagines a future with more sustainable living spaces.

“Saraceno’s main endeavour is to speculate how we can incorporate knowledge into living choices that don’t hurt our planet,” writes contemporary art magazine Hi-Fructose.

Could the hundreds of plastic bags you (hopefully) recycle every year be used to build houses? It may sound strange, but we assure you people are living in stranger spaces. Some are already using their recyclables to build homes.

Becoming Aerosolar is on display through Aug. 30 at the 21er Haus art museum in Vienna.
