Airstream for the Apocalypse: Tiny Home Generates Its Own Water and Power

This adorable little egg-shaped tiny home would be perfect for your next remote beach vacation. Or for surviving a post-apocalyptic wasteland.

The Ecocapsule is designed to let two people live completely off the grid for up to a year. The 86-square-foot home captures and filters rainwater and dew for the kitchenette, toilet and shower inside. And it has both solar panels and a teeny retractable wind turbine to generate electricity.

“Despite its small form, each Ecocapsule is fitted with all essentials necessary for a comfortable prolonged stay without a need to recharge or re-supply,” says Nice Architects, the Slovakian design company behind the Ecocapsule.

If Wes Anderson had made “Mad Max: Fury Road,” the Ecocapsule would have fit right in. It also is seems to echo Cloud Gate, the famous bean-like sculpture at Chicago's Millennium Park.

These little living capsules can be perched just about anywhere. High atop a mountain, next to open water, or in the middle of absolutely nowhere.

It collects its own water from the rain and dew, which it filters, making any source usable. It has solar cells and wind turbines and a high capacity battery that can provide all the power you need for extended periods of time. Running water, a flushing toilet and hot meals can all be had as you enjoy your off the grid existence.

The cabin sleeps two adults and has a dining area and storage. It has a sleek look inside and out. This look is not just functional but also stylish. The inside is a minimalist’s dream with blond wood paired with white walls and finishes. You can open and close the windows on both sides of the Ecocapsule, and thick insulation helps keep the space comfortable, regardless of what’s going on outside.

The pod is just over 8 feet tall and not quite 15 feet long. It weighs about 3,300 pounds.

The only thing is you will need to wait and save your cash. Nice Architects has completed a prototype and says they’ll begin production sometime next year. They haven’t set a price yet, but just shipping one to the United States will set you back about $2,500.

They also promise to have a towing chassis available, too. Once you get yours though you can place it on your trailer and hook it up to the back of your truck and hit the open road. Bon voyage!
