Sure, watching cars and planes turn into fighting robots in the movies is a lot of fun. But as far as “transformers” go, it’s hard to beat watching a woman’s nails turn into all kinds of flying shapes and colors.

Gizmodo highlights this short film, titled “Transforming,” in which some creative filmmakers use stop-motion animation to make fingernails come to life in three-dimensional (and well-manicured) detail.

According to the description on the YouTube clip, the “Transforming” team did the trick by importing their animation data into the “ProJet 660 Pro” full color 3D printer. They cranked out a total of 521 nails, the thinnest parts measuring only 0.56mm.

They then attached the nails to an actual human hand and filmed everything stop-motion style — frame by frame — with no computer graphics.

The result: we see fingernails that dance and transform into decorative marshmallows and little flying nail swans.

The video ends with the message: “Life is beautiful because it never stops Transforming.” It’s an exciting mash-up of the modern trend of 3D printing and the more classic art of stop-motion animation.
