3D Printer Prints Creative Gardens Out of Living ‘Ink’

The 3D printer has introduced a wealth of creativity and innovation. The industrial and technological potential is amazing, but it looks like its uses are literally growing even farther.

A group of college students in Slovenia designed a special 3D printer that prints living material. Project PrintGREEN uses a special “ink” mixture that’s made of soil, water and seeds. It can take the shape of any design, just like a regular digital, programmable machine, except this one dries and eventually grows grass.

The project started in 2013 as part of an interdisciplinary studies course, but quickly turned into a movement that even their local Greenpeace chapter couldn’t deny had seriously huge potential. We’ve reached out to the PrintGREEN team to see what they’re currently up to, but for now, you can see the innovative seeds of their labor.
