3 DIY Ways to Make Boring Tea Candles So Much Cooler

Everybody loves a tea candle! They burn bright, cast a warm glow and can be popped into everything from Mason Jars to tin cans as elegant additions to your home decor.

A great source for these little lights is IKEA. A pack of 100 GLIMMA candles is a steal at $3.49, so we encourage you to find lots of creative ways to display them!

Here, we’ve got 3 unique ideas for your tea candles that are anything but ordinary.

1. PLUMBING HARDWARE TEA LIGHT HOLDERS

Materials:

  • Metal Plumbing fittings

  • Foil tape

  • Tea candles

  • Tape Scissors

Process:

1. Collect a variety of metal plumbing fitting from a local hardware store. Be sure to pick fittings that have openings slightly larger than the width of a tea candle.

2. For fittings that are taller than 2-3”, simply cut a small piece of aluminum tape with tap scissors and place the tape inside the fitting to create a cradle for the candle to sit on.

3. For fittings that are the same height of just slightly taller than a tea candle, place the tea candle inside.

4. Arranging in groupings on your table or mantel for a “Steam punk” look!

2. COPPER DAISY TEALIGHT HOLDERS

Materials:

  • Copper Flashing

  • Sheet metal shears (or heavy duty scissors)

  • Armature wire (20-gauge)

  • Brass brad

  • Pencil for template

  • Awl

  • Tea candles

Process:

1. Cut an 8” x 4” piece of Copper Flashing with sheet metal shears.

2. Fold the piece of flashing in half with copper sides facing in, so you end up with a 4” x 4” folded piece.

3. With a pencil, draw a daisy flower shape on the folded piece.

4. Use the sheet metal shears to cut the daisy shape out. Be sure to cut through both layers. You should end up with two daisies.

5. Place the daisies face down at the edge of a flat work surface and use the side of an awl to smooth out the copper edges.

6. Use an awl to poke a hole in the center of each daisy.

7. Stack the daisies and insert a brad through both pieces. Position the top petals of the daisy so that they are offset with the petals underneath.

8. Take a piece of 20-gauge armature wire and coil it around the base of a tea candle several times.

9. Continue the same piece of armature wire up from the tea candle to desired height and coil wire twice around the stem of the brad that is through the daisy pieces. Snip excess wire with sheet metal shears.

10. Open brad to secure it around wire and hold the daisies in place.

11. Repeat to make a copper daisy candle garden with various heights of daisies.

3. PRINTED PALM TREE VOTIVES

Materials:

  • Palm tree pictures

  • Printer

  • Printer paper

  • Scissors

  • Clear tape

  • Electric tea light

Process:

1. Snap a picture of palm trees or search online for a no copyright palm tree photo.

2. Print the picture out on plain printer paper to the size of 4” x 6”.

3. Cut the bottom edge of the picture to be straight with scissors and than cut carefully around the tops of the palm trees for an organic shape.

4. Loop the picture to create a cylinder and tape together.

5. Place an electric tea light inside.

6. Repeat process to make a miniature light palm tree display.
