2,500 People Create World’s Longest Chain of Tattoos (They’re Temporary, Though)

Plenty of customers at the tattoo parlor choose an inspirational literary quote, but it’s hard to get an entire book inked on your body. Even if they were temporary tattoos, you’d run out of room before you even got to the last sentence.

So 2,500 people split up the entire text of the classic Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll, and each took a line to add (temporarily) to his or her body.

The resulting temporary tattoo chain spells out the entire tale, quote by quote, across literally thousands of strangers.

“Curiouser and curiouser,” you might exclaim.

The project started with a Kickstarter campaign to help a company called Litographs launch its new line of temporary tattoos.

According to the company’s Kickstarter page, it wanted to “celebrate how just a handful of powerful, poignant words from a book can shape our lives and imprint themselves forever in our minds and hearts.” (And imprint them temporarily on our bodies.)

Contributors paid at least a dollar each to receive a temporary tattoo with a snippet from the beloved novel. Before long, Litographs had raised $50,949, well past its original $7,500 goal, and the world’s longest (temporary) tattoo chain was born.

Contributors were then asked to post pictures of themselves sporting their tats on social media, and the results are pretty delightful. Many participants even chose to illustrate their quotes with amusing props or settings.

Despite the fact that the tattoos don’t require a great deal of commitment and ultimately act as an advertisement for the company, 2,500 people coming together to celebrate a love of literature is a pretty impressive feat.

And not only that, Litographs partners with the International Book Bank to send one new, high-quality book to a community in need for each poster, T-shirt, and tote bag it sells, and for every five tattoos.
