13 Unintentionally Horrifying Halloween Costumes

Last year, Americans spent $350 million on Halloween costumes … and that was just for their pets. Though there isn’t an estimate for how much humans spent on their costumes, the National Retail Federation reported that more than two-thirds of people bought their costume, and the total amount spent on Halloween overall was estimated at $7.4 billion.

Did you hear that? It’s the sound of makers and fans of handcrafted items everywhere screaming in horror!

Let’s put aside for a second the fact that store-bought costumes are unoriginal, because some people simply do not have the time to make a costume. (And that’s OK!)

Halloween pop-up shops offer more tricks than treats. Those manufactured costumes are astronomically overpriced and often poor quality. It never looks quite as good as it does in the photos online or on the package. And plastic masks and vinyl jumpsuits aren’t the most flattering or comfortable way to spend Oct. 31.

You’re better off spending your time browsing Pinterest and costume shop websites for inspiration and then hitting the thrift shops and craft stores instead.

The Halloween season is supposed to be spooky, but the scariest costumes are the ones flying off the shelves, despite being totally random, haphazard, and wildly inappropriate. (There are so many better options than Cecil the Lion and Caitlyn Jenner costumes, people.)

Here are just a handful of the many manufactured costumes that are haunting our DIY dreams this year.
