12 Ways to Reinvent a Dated Accent Wall and Bring it Back on Trend

The “accent wall” has been a feature in interior decor for quite some time now, and many would argue that it’s time to let it go. The single, contrasting wall concept has graced many a home with its punchy juxtaposition but seems to have gone from high design to dated as of late.

And why? Perhaps because it has, in many cases, become a halfhearted, last-ditch effort to breathe a little creativity into a space without any real attention to purpose.

Just consider: How many times have you found yourself with a half-empty can of paint and thought, “What the heck, I’ll paint an accent wall — I’ve got just about enough for that!” Good initiative and enthusiasm, but it’s probably not a good idea.

The Spiffy Company, which specializes in e-interior design, explains that an accent wall should do at least one of three things: Enhance the architecture, add depth, or frame and define your space.

“Many times when accent walls don’t work it is because there is no real reason why they are being created. A big, bright color on a wall might sound exciting, but is there a reason why you are painting that particular wall?” they ask.
