Zoë Kravitz Will Play Catwoman in New Batman Movie

The role of Catwoman in the DC Universe is a notoriously tricky one to fill. Stars from Halle Berry to Michelle Pfeiffer and Anne Hathaway have tackled the role with aplomb, but really, how could any mere mortal possibly measure up to Eartha Kitt?

Luckily for Big Little Lies fans, Zoë Kravitz—who just might be 2019’s answer to Kitt, and if you don’t believe me, listen to her sing—will try her hand at doing just that in Matt Reeves’s upcoming film The Batman, with pre-production expected to start this summer and a tentative release date scheduled for June 25, 2021.

Kravitz has been cast as Catwoman opposite Robert Pattinson’s Batman, Variety reports, beating out Zazie Beetz, Eiza González, and Alicia Vikander in the process.

While these actors could certainly have delivered as Catwoman, it feels like the role Kravitz was born to play; she has an inherent mix of warmth and coyness to her that feels very Catwoman-esque, plus the all-important aura of mystery that any good antiheroine needs.

Kravitz’s cat-inspired role fits right in with her family’s passion for animals; her father, musician and actor Lenny Kravitz, has two dogs, including a ridiculously adorable rescue puppy named JoJo Dancer and a Bahamian Potcake named Leroy Brown. Meanwhile, Zoë’s mother, actor Lisa Bonet, owns a donkey that she likes to walk in public near her Topanga, California, home. (Goals, et cetera.)
