16 Golden Globes Snubs That'll Go Down In History

There's nothing quite like a good awards show. Especially the Golden Globes — a ceremony where the wine is flowing and the celebs are seemingly getting loose and talking shit in the audience.
It's by far the most fun awards show of the season.
But of course, before the show comes the nominations. And every year, without fail, some very deserving people are left out of the running. Here are some of the biggest Golden Globes snubs in recent history.
1.Michaela Coel for her iconic series I May Destroy You.
The limited series based on Michaela Coel's life was one of the best TV shows of the last 10 years. It was beloved equally by critics and viewers and heralded as "the perfect show for an anxious world" by the NYT. It seems the Hollywood Foreign Press Association totally missed the memo on the show, though, as it received a big fat zero nominations...which angered a lot of people.
2.Stephanie Hsu for Everything Everywhere All At Once... despite her co-stars being nominated.
Everyone who's seen Everything Everywhere All At Once can agree on one thing: Actress Stephanie Hsu — who plays Joy — absolutely stole the show. Though the film was nominated for six Golden Globes at this year's ceremony, including for three acting awards, Stephanie was left off the list.
3.Greta Gerwig for writing and directing Little Women.
In 2019 the Globes made headlines for the wrong reasons, when zero women were nominated for writing or directing awards. This included Greta Gerwig, the brain behind the Little Women remake that won the hearts of audiences. She did end up being nominated for Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay at the Oscars, thankfully.
4.When They See Us for literally any award.
When They See Us, Ava DuVernay's dramatic series based on the Central Park Five, locked in a massive 11 Emmy nominations in 2019...but was totally passed over by the Globes. Outraged viewers were certain it'd be put up for Best Limited Series, or that Jharrel Jerome and Niecy Nash would be recognized for their acting roles. In fact, this snub was one of the many which led to the reckoning in 2021 over the lack of diversity in the HFPA.
5.Tom Cruise for Top Gun: Maverick, after taking a stand against the Globes.
Back in 2021, Tom Cruise returned the three Golden Globes he'd won over the course of his career to protest the lack of diversity within the HFPA. That seemed to be the nail in the coffin of his Golden Globes career. Last year's Top Gun: Maverick received two nominations (Best Picture, Drama and Best Song), but Tom didn't get a nod for his acting role.
6.Zendaya for the first season of Euphoria.
It's not an understatement to say that the whole internet was outraged after Zendaya wasn't nominated for a Golden Globe for playing Rue in Euphoria, particularly after picking up the Emmy a few months prior. Thankfully, she was nominated this year for her role in Season 2 of the show.
7.Friday Night Lights throughout the entirety of its five seasons.
From the acting to the script, Friday Night Lights was a cult favorite from 2006 to 2011 when it aired. But the HPFA didn't seem to agree, as it was never nominated at any point, in any category.
8.Roma for Best Picture, thanks to an outdated rule.
In the 2018 awards season race, Spanish-language Roma was everyone's favorite pick. At the Golden Globes, it was nominated three times for Best Director, Screenplay, and Foreign Language Film, but was very notably left out of the running for Best Picture. The Golden Globes had a rule against nominating a foreign-language film for Best Picture, which seems archaic especially considering even the Oscars gave Roma a nod.
The Globes' rule actually changed in 2022, thanks to the popularity of the Korean-language film Minari.
9.Viola Davis for her stand-out role in Widows.
Audiences were shocked when Viola Davis (and the rest of the cast) missed out on Golden Globe nominations for the female-led heist film Widows. Viola already has five Globe noms and a win under her belt, but anyone who saw Widows was sure she was a shoo-in for Best Actress.
10.Lupita Nyong'o for acting in Us.
Jordan Peele's horror film Us was arguably one of 2019's biggest films, but was noticeably absent from the Golden Globes nominations list. In particular, audiences felt that Lupita Nyong'o truly should have been nominated for playing the dual roles of Adelaide and Red.
11.The Wire for Best Series, at any point during its run.
Despite being one of the most loved and critically acclaimed series of the 2000s, surprisingly the show was never nominated for a single Golden Globe during the six years it was on the air.
12.The original songs from Mary Poppins Returns.
Disney films with original songs almost feel like they're automatically nominated for every award out there. But that wasn't the case for Mary Poppins Returns. Though Emily Blunt and Lin-Manuel Miranda got acting nods, and the score received a nomination, the original songs were completely shut out of the Globes race.
13.True Grit, despite sweeping at the Oscars.
The 2010 remake of True Grit was a massive box office hit, racking up a massive 10 Academy Award noms. But its number of Golden Globes nominations? Zero.
14.Emma Stone for her role in Maniac.
This Netflix miniseries had the makings of an awards show mega-hit: A-list actors Emma Stone and Jonah Hill, dark humor, and sci-fi vibes. But despite rave reviews and people binge-watching around the world, it was totally ignored by the Globes. Sure, there was a lot of other great TV that year. But Emma Stone's stellar performance deserved a little recognition.
15.John Krasinski for directing and starring in A Quiet Place.
The genre-bending horror film A Quiet Place was well-received by viewers and critics alike, with many people sure that John Krasinski's pivot from acting to directing would earn him a Globe nomination. But besides a Best Original Score nom, he got zip.
16.And finally: Meryl Streep, who was snubbed while James Corden was celebrated.
Meryl is the most recognized actress in Golden Globes history, with 32 nominations over her career. That's why it was so surprising back in 2021 when she was snubbed for not one but TWO nominations, for her work in The Prom and Let Them All Talk. It especially stung because James Corden got a nomination for his role in The Prom.
