Through child modeling, cute Disney Channel tween parts, Dancing With the Stars, and even a singing career, Zendaya made her way to the very heart of youth pop culture. Now with her role as MJ in the latest Spider-Man series, a fashion mashup (Tommy x Zendaya), and, of course, her widely praised and deeply moving portrayal of Rue in HBO's Euphoria, Zendaya's star burns even brighter. Every facet of her style is emulated. Her posts start instant trends. She puts the Z in Gen Z.
Allure talked to her about her current beauty obsession (it has to do with her nails), her favorite shortcuts (a pigmented hair conditioner), and the most-used item in her shower (an anti-dandruff shampoo). She also talks about a tiny imperfection in her face that she once thought she should fix but has now come to love, as well as her unexpected passion for interior design — and lots more.
Zendaya has a lot to say about beauty. And we're just asking.
ALLURE: What are three words to describe your head-turning red-carpet looks?
ZENDAYA: "The three people on my glam team: You got Law [Roach]; my stylist, Ursula [Stephen], on hair; Sheika [Daley] on makeup. Those three people make it happen."
A: What is your favorite thing about your face?
Z:"I quite like my [right front] tooth. It just lives outside my mouth. I used to hate it when I was younger, and then I decided I was going to get Invisalign or something, [but] I was like, 'No, fuck that.' And I kept it, and I’m glad I kept it."
A: Your best beauty shortcut?
__Z: __"Coloring my hair because I use this stuff called Overtone. It’s a color-depositing conditioner, and it’s so easy — boom! That’s what I’ve been using for this red [as seen on her at the 2019 Emmys]. I mix the red and the orange, put it in there, rinse it, and then it’ll wash out within a month."
A: Besides Rue in Euphoria, who's the best character you've played, beauty-wise?
Z:"I would say Anne Wheeler from The Greatest Showman — that pink wig was fun. And the soft, opalescent kind of makeup was really nice."
A: What was the last product you finished?
__Z: __"I’m assuming Aquaphor because we always have tubs of Aquaphor in our house. You just have to have it. If you have a cut, if you have dry lips, if you have anything, it’ll fix it."
A: Current beauty obsession?
Z: "My nails. I do my own gel polish: I wasn’t ever satisfied completely when someone else did it, so I [said], 'You know what? I’m going to do it myself.' I bought the lamp and all the supplies I needed and never looked back."
A: Current obsession, period?
Z: "I think my current obsession, in general, is interior decor. I feel like I could be an interior designer. It would be my dream to design a hotel."
A: The most-used item in your makeup bag?
Z: "Probably the mascara. You can do pretty much nothing, maybe a little whatever, but mascara kind of brings everything together. My favorite is Lancôme Monsieur Big." [She is a spokesperson for the brand.]
A: And the most-used item in your shower?
Z: "Probably the shampoo. It’s Philip Kingsley for a dry, flaky scalp. Sometimes I get dandruff, and it is the best thing I've found that cuts that out. And this one doesn't strip your hair."
A: What is a beauty look you're dying to try next?
__Z: __"I pretty much have tried everything. I think maybe I can have a little bit more fun with eye shadow and playing with the shape of my eyes."
A: Can you share your greatest beauty extravagance?
Z: "This sounds bad, but I get sent so much stuff that I don’t really have to spend money on anything, which is really backwards, right? It’s like the more you can afford stuff, the more free stuff you get, which doesn’t make a lot of sense."
