Zack Synder Wants to Direct Gears of War Movie

Zack Synder may be in the middle of promoting his latest film, sci-fi spectacular Rebel Moon (take a look at the new Rebel Moon trailer), but that hasn’t stopped him making plans for his next directorial project.

In an interview with IGN, Synder, along with his wife and co-producer Deborah Snyder, were asked what video games would lend themselves to a movie. Synder responded: “Well, there are a lot.”

“We’ve talked about a bunch of…Gears has always come up in our sort of circle. I was always interested in the Halo franchise…They of course kind of made that, but it was something I always thought could be incredible.”

Given Gears of War and Halo are two of gaming’s biggest franchises, it’s not the first time someone has wanted to convert that success into a lucrative adaptation. Paramount released a Halo series last year, which received a mixed reception, while in 2022 Netflix announced plans for a Gears of War movie, in addition to an adult animated series based on the game.

With Snyder now working with Netflix on his Rebel Moon two-parter (the second instalment releases April 2024), it wouldn’t be much of a leap to see him helming the Gears of War movie.

He’ll have to wait a while for Halo, however. Production on season 2 is already well underway. With the actor’s strike no doubt pushing back the release date, it means Synder will have to wait even longer to make his take on Master Chief a reality.
