Alison Victoria's no stranger to the spotlight. As the publisher of Chicago-based lifestyle magazine Sophisticated Living, and as the star of HGTV's hit show, Windy City Rehab, she's used to her work making headlines. But that doesn't mean she's jaded by it.
When House Beautiful Editorial Director Jo Saltz surprised the designer in Chicago with a copy of our September 2019 issue—which features Alison's Bucktown home on the cover—Alison couldn't hold back her emotions.
"It's been a crazy month," she told Jo, referring to a whirlwind few weeks filming the second season of Windy City Rehab, as well as HGTV's upcoming show Rock the Block, and working with the city of Chicago to rectify permitting issues that affected some of her properties. "As someone who loves magazines, this means so much to me."
Jo captured the surprise on camera, and honestly, her reaction is so pure that you cannot watch it without getting pumped yourself. Check out the video above to see it firsthand, and get a glimpse inside the issue here:
Now, about that house: Initially, Alison intended for the Bucktown house to be just another home she flipped, but the more she got involved with the project, the more she fell in love. Before long, she was adding some of her most treasured flea market finds to the house—like antique corbels in the coffee bar, and an unlacquered brass doorknob in the shape of a fist in the powder room—and in that moment, she knew she was in too deep. This home needed to be hers. Over the next year, she completed the house, poring over every detail to make it 100 percent her.
Look for the September issue—on newsstands Tuesday, August 13—to see her entire house, and learn how Alison's favorite place in the world (Paris!) inspired its decor.
