Indecisive dressers, rejoice! You may no longer have to face the dilemma of which color to wear, thanks to a dress that changes colors at the touch of a button. No joke. Australian e-retailer Showpo recently released a YouTube video showcasing its brand-new, color-changing dress.
We know what you’re thinking. Sure, a color-changing dress is possible, if it’s huge, metal and clunky with wires coming out of it. But who would wear that? No one.
Which is why this dress is not that all like that. The video shows a model in a flowy white dress with a high-low skirt, cinched waist, and high neck — the type of dress we’d definitely try on. Then, all of a sudden, Showpo’s CEO Jane Lu tells her colleague to change the dress to pink. He touches a color wheel on an iPad, and — voilà — the dress seamlessly becomes pink. Everyone in the room shrieks and jumps for joy that the incredible creation works. Lu then commands blue, and of course, the dress fades to blue right before your eyes, à la Sleeping Beauty at the ball. That reminds us, this has actually happened before, in a Disney parade.
But back to a dress we’d actually wear: After changing the color one more time, this time to purple, the video ends with everyone jumping up and down and screaming, and you with your jaw on the floor.
Understandably, this video has created a fashion firestorm, and shoppers all over the world are questioning if it’s real, and if so, how it was accomplished.
Maybe they cut and edited the video perfectly so that the model could change? Nope. The color change is too gradual for that. Is it a lighting trick? Could be. But Showpo promises it’s real.
So, how is this possible? According to Finder.com.au, the dress is made from “special fabric that can reflect different light frequencies.” The fabric is linked to a device, in this case an iPad, which can “communicate with the fabric” and change which “frequency of light the fabric reflects.” We can’t even figure out how to sync our iPad to our new speakers, yet this company has connected it to a dress?
Kelly McCarren of Showpo spoke to Finder about the innovative item. “Jane has always wanted to be innovative and ahead of the game when it comes to technology,” McCarren said. “She doesn’t compete in the market, she dominates!”
We’re still not totally sure we believe what we’re seeing, but there’s only one way to find out: Buy it. Unfortunately, it’s not available yet — but we hope to solve this mystery once it is.
