Well, W magazine threw a curveball in the Lili Reinhart-Cole Sprouse breakup news cycle. The magazine just released its fall issue featuring both of them on the cover. The two did separate interviews—they requested this on purpose, perhaps hinting they were close to ending things then—on their decision to date privately. The interviews were conducted during their summer hiatus from the show, right around the time Sprouse reportedly decided to end his relationship of nearly two years with Reinhart after they had an argument.

Reinhart explained that Sprouse was the one who initially pushed to keep their real-life relationship private. (The two were first rumored to be dating in spring 2017 but did not go public until April/May 2018.) “At first, I didn’t want things private,” Reinhart said. “Now that I’m X amount of years in, I do appreciate the privacy we have, that he’s encouraged me to take. No one knows how long we’ve been together, and no one will until we’re ready to say it. No one knows how we fell in love, except for our close friends and us. It’s really special. If and when we break up on the show, I don’t know,” she said, trailing off, according to W. “It’s weird being with an actor. You deal with shit no one has to deal with.”

Sprouse explained to W he likes to keep relationships private so they organically develop. “Until you go through the paces and the dating stages and know that something is right for you, I don’t think it’s appropriate to bring others in,” he said, though he also acknowledged he understands how their real-life relationship adds extra intrigue to their being together on the show as Betty and Jughead. “I think part of the fun that the audience had, and still has, is going: What’s up with them right now? It’s interesting! But in all honesty, my own happiness and her happiness come before caring about what people are saying.”

Reinhart also stressed that her dating Sprouse wasn't her entire identity, something she hopes fans understand. Going public with their romance, “we’re acknowledging that we’re in a relationship, but it’s a small part of who we are as people. We want our own separate identities.”
