Between sleeping, watching Netflix, and napping, you probably spend a lot of time between your sheets. And if you've hopped on the silk pillowcase trend, you might feel like you've discovered the answer to all of your creased skin, bed head, and overall meh sleep problems.

So, why not spread the love to the rest of your body? Regular sheets are out, and luxurious silk sheets are so, so in. Besides feeling literally amazing, there are a ton of silk benefits for both your hair and skin. Natural silk contains amino acids, which can help repair skin damage and soften the look of fine lines and wrinkles. "It's a protein-based fiber versus a plant-based [fiber] and just behaves differently," says Melony Huber, a travel fashion and textile expert, and interior designer and co-founder of La Peony.

Peep a few of the best tried-and-tested silk sheets, below:

Meet the expert: Melony Huber is a travel fashion and textile expert, and interior designer and co-founder of La Peony.

Because silk reduces friction as you toss and turn in your sleep, it lessens the pulling and creasing of your skin and protects your hair from split ends and frizz. Plus, the fabric is naturally hypoallergenic, so it’s less likely to irritate sensitive skin.

Still not convinced to make the swap to luxurious silk bed sheets? Consider this: Silk is an incredibly breathable fabric, which is temperature-regulating. For all you hot sleepers out there, that means the best silk sheets are quick to adjust to your body temperature so you can have a cool, blissful night’s rest. No more waking up in a sweat (sign me up!).

Below is a roundup of the best-tested silk sheet sets out there, according to rave reviews and an expert. And, there are a few satin dupes for when you're on a budget—so, you and your bed can look and feel equally good.

How we chose the best silk sheets

For the past few months, Women’s Health editors, including our editorial assistant Addison Aloian, have been researching the bestselling, most popular, and top-rated silk sheets. Our team consulted Melony Huber, a travel fashion and textile expert, and interior designer and co-founder of La Peony, for the story. Additionally, the team evaluated thousands of customer reviews and ratings to narrow down the best silk sheets for a wide range of needs and preferences.

What should someone look for in silk sheets?

There are a few things to consider when shopping for silk sheets.

Price Point

If you're looking for Mulberry silk sheets, those will be 100 percent silk, a.k.a., "the highest grade of silk," says Huber. So, they're going to be a bit pricier than your average sheets.

Momme Count And Weight

Mommes are the silk equivalent to a thread count. The higher the count, the more durable the sheets will be. (But also, the higher the price will be.) Most standard silk sheets have 19 to 22 mommes, but the *very* high-quality sheets have 25 to 30 mommes, she says. However, it might be worth it for you, because they're supposed to last longer.

The weight of the sheets themselves is also dependent on the mommes. The lower the mommes, the thinner and lighter weight the sheet is, and the higher, the heavier the sheet is. "The sweet spot seems to be 19 to 22, and that would be your typical weight that it feels like you have something on you, but still light," she says. "You're not supposed to sweat and you're not supposed to freeze."

Certifications

If you like to make sure your products are of the highest quality, you'll want to do some research and look into whether you want your sheets to be OEKO-TEX and/or GOTS (global organic textile standard)-certified, Huber says.

The OEKO-TEX certification means the sheet fibers have been tested for 350 different chemicals. "Our skin is an organ and you are going to absorb whatever kind of gases, per se, are coming out of that or anything unfriendly for your skin," she says.

And the GOTS certification ensures the sheets are organic. "It's just one more layer of making sure it's healthy for you, that it doesn't have toxic chemicals." However, these certifications will probably drive up the price point.

Silk Alternatives

Look out for any silk alternatives meant to mimic silk, such as satin. "Silk satin can refer to satin weave, which originated in the far east, and it creates the silk sheen that we're accustomed to," Huber says. It can also refer to the blend.

Sometimes, "satin" sheets refer to the way they were woven, but that may mean that they're made from polyester nylon. "It feels really good and it's used so much and it lasts for so long," Huber says. "But also those threads are derived from oil or petroleum, which probably doesn't sound that great on your skin."

If the cost is low or the washing instructions say it's okay to dry, it probably has a synthetic in it. (Pure silk isn't typically machine-washable or dryable.)

Are silk sheets worth the cost?

It depends on you and your personal preferences. If you value the health benefits of silk sheets—like possibly repairing skin damage and easing the look of wrinkles—and you don't mind taking extra time (and space) for hand-washing and drying, then, yes, they might be worth it for you, Huber says.

What are the benefits of silk sheets?

They're great for skin and hair, especially if you have an oily face, because they're better at preventing bacteria from breeding that could cause you to break out in comparison to other sheets, Huber says. "It's just going to keep your skin overall healthier."

Do silk sheets last long over time?

Like most sheet sets, they should last two to four years, as long as you take care of them, and hand-wash and dry them, Huber says. If you put them in a washer on a hot setting, "they'll start to get holes, they'll lose their soft sheen," she adds.

Is it better to sleep on silk or satin sheets?

According to Huber, it's better to sleep on pure silk sheets, because some satin sheets can contain polyester nylon. These threads can be derived from oil or petroleum, so it might not be great to have them up against your face while you sleep every night.

How can someone find good silk sheets?

Well, if you're on this article, you're probably doing some solid research—which is what you should be doing. Look for the features you'd want in terms of how many mommes, whether you want pure Mulberry silk, and any certifications for the sheets. Remember, you can trust brands and websites with heavily-reviewed products, Huber says.
