Whether or not King Charles watches The Crown remains a mystery. Apparently, at the state opening of Scottish Parliament last year, he told politicians, "Hello, nice to meet you all. I'm nowhere near how they portray me on Netflix." Though the British King may feel he is not as portrayed accurately, the royal drama definitely got one thing right: his breakdancing skills.
In the fifth episode of season five of The Crown, Prince Charles breakdances. Yes, you read (or watched) that correctly: the then future King (portrayed this season by Dominic West) breakdanced during an event with his charity, The Prince's Trust.
And that dance is based on a true story: It was inspired by a real moment in 1985 when Prince Charles visited a course organized by the Prince's Trust in Middleton-on-Sea in West Sussex. There, he went to a discotheque where he was encouraged to dance. He gamely participated, and even dropped to his knees at one point.
Throughout the video, he seems to be copying the moves of a very talented dancer, attempting a moonwalk and other footwork. Here, you can watch the real Prince Charles, who was 37 at the time, breakdance in 1985:
Earlier this year, clips of Charles breakdancing went viral on TikTok. As one commenter wrote, "He tried. Reminded me of Mr bean 😂" That is not the first time the clip went viral; every few years, the internet is reminded of Prince Charles's dancing skills.
Futhermore, his 1985 foray into breakdancing is not King Charles's only time cutting a rug in public; over the years, Charles has often joined in dancing with locals during royal tours.
So when The Crown showed Prince Charles breakdancing in the '90s, it was not too far off from actual royal history.
