More than four decades later, the tragic story of Candace “Candy” Montgomery and Betty Gore is resurfacing again in Hulu’s limited series Candy. Starring Jessica Biel as the titular character, the five-episode show follows the aftermath of Betty’s murder and has viewers wondering ... where is Candy today?
In the first episode of the true crime series, Candy is seen running away from Betty’s house before jumping in her car and driving away. Candy was bleeding from her forehead, her glasses were gone and her hair was wet. The only sound that came from Betty’s house was her newborn daughter’s cries from a crib upstairs. In real life, the police quickly pointed the finger to Candy but it was some time before they pieced together what had unfolded in the Gore household.
Where is the real Candy Montgomery now?
According to reports, Candy stopped by Betty’s home to run an errand on June 13, 1980, in Wylie, Texas. But while there, Betty confronted Candy about having an affair with her husband, Allan. Though Candy was married with two kids of her own, she became involved with Allan on December 12, 1978, per Parade. It went on for several months before he called it off. Candy didn’t deny the affair and Betty reportedly brought out an ax. The situation quickly escalated, and Candy struck her 41 times with the heavy tool.
After Allan couldn’t get ahold of Betty (he was away on a business trip), he asked another neighbor to check on her and she was found dead. Despite being arrested and charged with murder, Candy was acquitted on October 29, 1980. During the trial, she pleaded self-defense. She was put under hypnosis by psychiatrist Dr. Fred Fason who determined she had a “dissociative reaction” when Betty told her to “sush,” a trigger from childhood trauma. Candy was allegedly not aware of how many times she hit Betty with the ax.
At the end of the trial, a jury comprised of three men and nine women ruled she was not guilty of murder. Candy and her husband, Pat, reportedly left Wylie and moved to Georgia. The two eventually divorced, according to outlets. Today, Candy is said to still live in the southern state where she now goes by her maiden name, Wheeler. It’s also believed that she now works as a mental health counselor or a therapist.
