The season 3 finale of Yellowstone, which aired in August, ended with a major cliffhanger: John, Kayce, and Beth Dutton's fate was left up in the air.
In the last few minutes of the episode, a bomb went off in Beth's office, causing everyone to question if she survived.
Now, Kelly Reilly, the actress who plays Beth, is responding to speculation on if she's leaving the show ahead of season 4.
The season 3 finale of Yellowstone didn't give fans the closure they were looking for. In the final moments of the season, a bomb exploded in Beth's office, gunmen stormed Kayce's office, and John was shot by a mysterious passerby. Understandably, fans have been wondering what this shocking ending means for the future of the Duttons on the hit Paramount Network show.
Many have questioned if this ending was simply creator Taylor Sheridan's Dutton-level way to kill off one, two, or three (hate to say it) of the show's main characters. The cast, who has spent the latter half of 2020 filming the fourth season in Montana, has been tight-lipped about what lies ahead, so much so that many of the show's biggest stars have strayed away from posting on social media like they've done while filming previous seasons.
Beth, who has become a clear favorite for her take-no-prisoners attitude and catchy one-liners ("You are the trailer park. I am the tornado."), remains fan's top concern. Kelly Reilly, who plays Beth on the show, posted a cryptic Instagram following the season finale about Beth's "wild ride" — and fans immediately keyed in on her usage of the past tense.
Although the actress won't come right out and say if Beth survives or not, she recently opened up to Esquire about what she wants to see for her character ... which feels hopeful, at least?
As an actor, especially one that's been put through hell and back with a character like Beth, I was like, 'What's the end game?' And there's a big cliffhanger obviously at the end of season three. Obviously I can't tell you whether or not Beth makes it another day, to see if she finds that peace that you talk about. But it's an interesting question with any character. Is happiness something that is an ultimate end goal?
In many ways, the third season showed Beth coming into her own, even exposing her vulnerabilities to her longtime love, Rip. Kelly hopes that if her character returns for season 4, Beth will continue to find security in her relationship: "Whether it lasts or not, it wouldn't be a drama if it was constant. I don't think that we're at the happy ending stage yet, but I think there's a glimmer of happiness and where that happiness and where that peace could live, you know what I mean," she said in the same Esquire interview.
But Beth's fate (along with everyone else's) remains in the hands of Taylor. "He doesn't know what's necessarily going to make it on the page, but he has an overall kind of epic beginning, middle, and end for all the characters, and in the world of Yellowstone." So, it looks like all further questions and concerns should be directed to him until the show returns for season 4 in June.
