It's not every day that Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford star in a television series together, as is the case on Taylor Sheridan's Yellowstone prequel 1923. And thankfully for the fans, there are more episodes coming. The second half of season 1 has yet to air. There will be eight total episodes, and the remaining four are coming to Paramount+, after a brief hiatus, in February. But that doesn't count as a second season. It's too brief!
Do Helen and Harrison's star power give the show legs beyond a single season? Here's everything we know about 1923 season 2.
Yes, season 2 of 1923 is on the way....
According to Deadline, 1923 was renewed for a second season right off the bat. Both seasons will be eight episodes long. Who knows if the show will go on for much longer after that though. For one thing, sooner or later on the series it's going to be 1924!
Who will be in season 2 of 1923?
Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren are both committed. Beyond that, we may have to wait and see who survives. Will Timothy Dalton's character make it? It's up in the air.
When will we get season 2 of 1923?
That part is unclear. Yellowstone has been pretty consistent about airing seasons a year apart. The only outlier was between season 3 (which premiered in summer 2020) and season 4 (which premiered in 2021). We all know why that took longer, right? I don't need to remind you? The whole pandemic? There still is a pandemic BTW, but we figured out how to make television during it. All of this is to say that an educated guess would place season 2 in December of 2023 or January of 2024 at the latest.
Technically the Yellowstone prequels could keep going!
Fun fact: according to Deadline, the whole reason 1923 exists is that Paramount+ wanted to renew 1893 for a second season, but Taylor Sheridan killed off just about every character. They said figure something out, so he got started on a new prequel series set a few decades later with another corner/generation of the Dutton family.
"I kept hunting history," Taylor told Deadline, "and I kept finding things. It’s the one great thing about the Dutton family; you can skip generations and put them in all these unique situations, and it has nothing to do with Yellowstone, nothing to do with 1883, and yet it’s tethered completely to them, but they’re all stand-alones. That’s what I find so intriguing about it."
So maybe instead of 1923 season 3, we'll get a 1953 or something. That may actually be what they do–or pretty close. Deadline also reported, back when they announced the two-season pick-up for 1923, that Taylor was considering the 1940s and 1960s as potential settings for future prequels. At this rate, we're going to know more about Dutton family history than the present day members of the clan themselves!
