Yara Shahidi Has Perfected the Effortless Curly Updo

Yara Shahidi’s halo of raven curls don’t require much zhooshing, but that doesn't make her any less willing to experiment with different styles. As much was clear on Saturday night at the 2019 LACMA Art + Film Gala, where the 19-year-old actress and activist opted to play up the sculptural silhouette of her asymmetrical gold Gucci gown by tossing her hair up into a supersized topknot.

Finessed by her hairstylist Nikki Nelms, Shahidi's towering updo was accented by a curtain of coiled fringe that delicately grazed her almond-shaped gaze and the tops of her cheekbones to sultry effect. Adding nuance to her glowing skin, her eyes were shaded with a copper wash of pigment and flicked with jet-back liner, while her lips were saturated with a rich, mocha-tone pigment fitting for the fall season.
