Aparicio is nominated tonight for the Academy Awards for Best Actress for her appearance in Alfonso Cuarón's 2018 drama Roma, in which she plays the role of Cleo. Aparicio made history for her nomination, as she is the first Mexican indigenous woman to be nominated for the Best Actress award.

Aparicio is from Heroica Ciudad de Tlaxiaco in Oaxaca, Mexico. Her mother is from the Triqui tribe, while her father is Mixtec. Despite her Mixtec heritage, Aparicio was not fluent in the language and learned it specifically for her role as Cleo in Roma.

This is not Aparicio's only Best Actress award nomination for her role in Roma. Aparicio was also nominated in the category at the Critics' Choice Awards, Satellite Awards, and the Austin Film Critics Association. Aparicio secured her first award for her performance in Roma last year, where she received the New Hollywood Award at the 2018 Hollywood Film Awards.
