Cavani’s father: ‘Strong chance’ he’ll join Atletico Madrid
Edinson Cavani appears to want out of Paris Saint-Germain, and he seems to have a clear destination in mind.
Cavani’s father Luis told Sky Sports the 32-year-old striker’s preferred destination is Atletico Madrid.
“I think there is a strong chance he will go to Atletico,” Luis said. “The option to join the club (Atletico) always remains in June.”
Cavani is out of a contract this summer and can always join Atleti on a free, but if PSG knows they’re going to lose him, they have impetus to sell.
Luis added his son is being treated “unfairly” by the French giants, to whom he handed in a transfer request earlier this week, according to PSG’s sporting director Leonardo.
Cavani has scored just five goals in 14 appearances for PSG, and Atletico Madrid has a need at striker after Antoine Griezmann left for Barcelona over the summer and club-record signing Joao Felix has gotten off to a slow start.
PSG, though, reportedly wants to keep Cavani the rest of the campaign as it chases elusive Champions League glory. Kylian Mbappe has become one of the very best strikers in the world and has sent Cavani down the pecking order.
