Xander Bogaerts' hot start in Boston derailed by cracked bone in left ankle
Boston shortstop Xander Bogaerts is off to a blazing start this season, hitting .368 with nine RBI, seven doubles, and a pair of home runs as the Red Sox have gotten of to an 8-1 start.
But Boston will have to make due without the 2016 All-Star for the next couple of weeks at least after Bogaerts was diagnosed with a fractured bone in his left ankle on Monday. He is being placed on the 10-day disabled list and is expected to miss 10-14 days, the team announced.
Bogaerts suffered the injury on Sunday when he slid into the Tampa Bay Rays dugout while chasing a misplayed ball. He needed help off the field and was replaced by Brock Holt in the lineup.
“I feel comfortable at shortstop, second base, third base — pretty much anywhere,” Holt said on Sunday. “It’s a tough team to crack the lineup. I hate to see (Bogaerts) get injured there. … But I feel like I can step in and do a good job.”
The Red Sox called up Triple-A infielder Tzu-Wei Lin to fill Bogaerts’ roster spot.
