Wrong-number text leads to great prize from Buccaneers for teenager

He’s a Cleveland Browns fan, but Justin Deeds is the proud owner of a nice bit of Tampa Bay Buccaneers gear.

And how he came to get it is a pretty cool story.

Via the Tampa Bay Times, Deeds got a text in March from a number he didn’t know; the message was from a member of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers staff, reminding him of his meeting with the team after Ohio State’s pro day, which was coming up in a couple of days.

One problem: while Deeds does play football, he is a 5-foot-10, 160 pound safety at Twinsburg High School, not an NFL prospect from Ohio State.

So he replied to the text: “I’d be glad to do so. I’d love to be a part of the Bucs organization even though I’m a high school senior.”

After apologizing, the unnamed Bucs staff member asked Deeds if the team could send him anything, and Deeds made a pretty big ask.

“As a longtime football fan is there any chance that I can get a signed Mike Evans jersey(?),” he texted.

The response came back: yes.

Last week, Deeds got a package from One Buc Place with a white Evans jersey and the Pro Bowler’s autograph on it.

“Best accidental text ever,” Deeds tweeted, with screencaps of the text exchange and himself holding his new jersey.

Deeds will attend Kent State in the fall.
