‘So wrong on every level’: Viewers have cringe reactions to Mary Kay Letourneau’s new comments in A&E documentary

“This was and is so wrong on every level.” “I have literally heard enough.” Yahoo commenters aren’t holding back when it comes to former schoolteacher Mary Kay Letourneau’s recent attempts to rationalize her relationship with ex-student Vili Fualaau. The 34-year-old Letourneau started a relationship with Fualaau, then a 12-year-old student, in the summer of 1996. Letourneau was arrested in March 1997, and the case become national news. On Tuesday, Letourneau talked about her relationship with Fualaau on A&E’s documentary "Mary Kay Letourneau: Autobiography." “He was young, I get it,” Letourneau said. “Am I sorry that he’s the father of my children? No I’m not.” Fualaau asked Letourneau for a kiss back in 1996, which she agreed to. “Back in the day, I accepted the kiss, you know,” Letourneau said. “I did. He wasn’t my student when that happened. For some reason, the kiss, it seemed very right.” Decades later, the scandal is no less controversial: “Totally wrong,” said one Yahoo reader. “Parents should be able to trust the teacher not to do this to your 12-year-old.” Another comment read, “Geez. As if him not being her student at the time makes any of it ok.” Letourneau reflected on what could have been if it had remained a simple kiss between them. “Maybe it could have stayed just a kiss,” Letourneau said. “I always thought, ‘What if it could have?’” What do you think?
