There are a lot of cool things out there that make us wonder — do they really work? In our I Tried It series, we set out to use them in the real world and have determined that, in fact, they really do.

On Trial: Peace Out Wrinkle Patches

The Tester: Melanie Yates, retinol veteran, but a microneedling newbie

The Brief: As anyone who regularly trawls the r/SkincareAddiction subreddit knows, the trial-and-error process of using different skincare products can be a waiting game. Any brands claiming overnight results are likely selling snake oil. I've found that my combination-type skin is impacted most by stress and lack of sleep, and so over these past couple of months, I've tried to treat the cause of my skin woes — not obsess over every fine line and acne flare-up.

But that doesn't mean that I've gone product-less. I still use prescription retinol a few times a week at night to chemically exfoliate and increase collagen production — this has the dual benefit of reducing acne and the appearance of wrinkles, although it can take weeks of skin purging to see results. Plus, it's easy to overdo it.

However, microneedling — a dermatological treatment in which the top layer of the skin is perforated with tiny needles to expedite the regeneration process — offers similar results on a quicker timeline. It had always seemed like a bougie cosmetic treatment, even if dermatologists attest to its skin-rejuvenating efficacy.

When I came across Peace Out's Wrinkle Patches, which are single-use microneedling adhesives that actually contain retinol, I decided that in the spirit of at-home spa experimentation I would call them in to give them a try.

Each box of these wrinkle patches contains six 1-inch-long adhesives that have 450 microneedles each. These needles, formulated with ingredients including sodium hyaluronate (aka hyaluronic acid) ascorbic acid (aka vitamin C), and peptides, along with retinol, deliver a two-in-one treatment of penetrating the skin and treating the spot directly with its cocktail of skincare ingredients. Peace Out’s advice is to use two patches per week on the same spot for 2 weeks for best results.

I used the Peace Out Wrinkle Patches exclusively on the fine frown lines on my forehead, in the hopes of lessening their visibility before they become more deep-set. Sticking the adhesive on with clean hands was easy, and I didn't have to touch the microneedles at all. After sticking onto the spot and following the instructions to gently press on the patch, I could feel the microneedles sink into the skin, which felt like really nice facial acupressure.

The patches are supposed to stay on your skin for a minimum of 6 hours, or overnight if you choose, so I mostly used them before bedtime. In the morning, I'd peel off the patch, and just as promised, the needles were completely dissolved into serum, which had mostly absorbed into my skin.

I think that the major benefit of these wrinkle patches is that they are basically a spot treatment for fine lines. The patch sticks firmly to your skin and ensures that the ingredients penetrate the area overnight, instead of getting rubbed off onto your pillowcase. And because these adhesives are dissolvable and single-use, they're more sanitary than at-home needle rollers, and they're simple to use, leaving no trace of redness or peeling behind.

After using the Peace Out Wrinkle Patches for just 2 weeks to start, the patches haven't eliminated my 11 lines completely, but I've been pleased to see that they've made a small difference in smoothing out that between-the-brows area. I'd say that a few more weeks of this routine would improve this spot even more. It's helped me to experience the potency of these ingredients and this method of administering them after a relatively short amount of time.

Closing Argument: Until I can make the dermatologist appointment to get the full dermarolling treatment, the Peace Out Wrinkle Patches have been a great spot treatment to get me started. They're a microdose of microneedling for helping to reduce my frown lines, and I'm finding that it's been worth the wait.
