Wreck-It Ralph gets Rickrolled, visits dark web in 'Ralph Breaks the Internet' trailer

Reformed video-game bad guy Wreck-It Ralph (John C. Reilly) will embark on a quest through the wild, wondrous online realm when Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2 debuts in theaters later this year. And while we know that he’ll encounter some familiar franchise favorites along the way — including characters from Star Wars, Marvel, Pixar, and the Disney princess line, among others — the film’s newest trailer finally reveals the specific reason he’ll be leaving his comfort zone in Litwak’s Arcade for a new adventure.

Thanks to a broken steering wheel that causes Vanellope von Schweetz’s (Sarah Silverman) game Sugar Rush to be unplugged, Ralph and his pint-size best friend head online to find a replacement part. That, in turn, puts them into contact with spammers, clickbaiters, the magical princesses (who are here seen taking group selfies with Vanellope), and enough cat memes to give you a hairball.

Additionally, it forces the duo to seek assistance from holographic Buzztube bigwig Yesss (Taraji P. Henson), as well as the protagonists of a gritty urban driving game called Slaughter Race, whose leader, Shank (Gal Gadot), helps teach Vanellope that she doesn’t have to have the same dream as Ralph — and that maybe the internet could be her permanent home.

One place in which she clearly won’t want to reside, however, is the dark web, where Ralph winds up having to deal with Double Dan (Alfred Molina), a creature whose little brother is more than a bit gross.

Aside from all the internet-based visual Easter eggs, the trailer is scored to “Never Gonna Give You Up,” making the entire clip one giant Rickroll.

The film also has a new poster:

Directed by Rich Moore (Zootopia, Wreck-It Ralph), and also featuring the voices of Jack McBrayer, Jane Lynch, Alan Tudyk, Ed O’Neill, Ali Wong, Timothy Simons, Glozell Green, and Hamish Blake, Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2 arrives in theaters on Nov. 21.
