You won't believe how much a Tom Brady rookie card fetched on eBay

We don’t know how much longer Tom Brady has in his career, but we do know this: the market for Brady collectibles is healthy indeed. Three days before the Super Bowl, a Brady rookie card sold for $250,000 on eBay. Yes, for the price of a house in much of the country, this could be yours:

Here’s what will have you combing through shoeboxes in your old room: the card, a Playoff Contenders Rookie Ticket championship version, was one of 100 printed. So there are 99 other of these quarter-million-dollar beauties out there just waiting to be slabbed and sold. The card was sold on behalf of a collector who bought it three years ago for $15,000.

As ESPN’s Darren Rovell notes, this is the highest sum ever paid for a Brady collectible, eclipsing the $57,500 paid last year for a game-used jersey. It’s the second-highest price ever for a modern collectible, after a LeBron James “Logoman” card that fetched $312,000 in 2016. (Worth noting: the same seller has another Brady rookie listed with a Buy-It-Now price of $500,000. Scrape together those pennies!)

The Brady card may well be the most valuable football card ever sold; public sales peg the previous high seller as a Bronko Nagurski card from 1935 at $240,000. Regardless, it’s still miles behind the most valuable sports card in history: the fabled 1909-1911 Honus Wagner card, one copy of which went for $3.16 million last year. So that’s the barrier for Brady to hit, and we wouldn’t bet against him, or his cards.
