When I first saw the inside of a checkerboard cake, I gasped. I was stunned by how crazy it looked. The checkered confection looked absolutely impossible. So when my boss asked me to make one and turn it into a video, I freaked out. There's no way I can get this on my first try, I thought. If you're thinking the same, you are wrong. Anyone can make a checkerboard cake.

Cake-wise, use your favorite chocolate and vanilla cake recipes. Or use boxed mixes, as we did. The more important parts are the size of your cake pans and your biscuit cutters. I recommend 8-inch for a towering, jaw-dropping four layer cake. If you follow this route, you'll need 6-, 4-, and 2-inch cutters.

Once the cakes are baked and cooled, use the largest biscuit cutter to cut out a large ring for each cake. Then use a 4-inch biscuit cutter to cut out a smaller ring from each 6-inch round. Finally, use a 2-inch biscuit cutter to cut out a small circle from each 4-inch round. Then assemble alternating vanilla and chocolate rings and rounds to look like a target. It's easier than it sounds. Watch the video and you'll see.
