Trying to find a parking place in a packed garage can be a bit stressful — especially in a city like New York … searching for a long time, going around in circles until you find an empty spot. But after finally finding a spot, New York resident Nicholas Chew discovered that his parking agony wasn’t over. In a dashcam video posted online on Saturday, Chew encounters a woman who blocks him from the empty parking spot, not allowing him to park. She claims that she was “here first,” but no car is in sight. (Some may find the language in the following video offensive.)
The video has been viewed more than 95,000 times, going viral by sparking outrage and fierce debate. Is it fair for her to save a parking spot in this way before the car is even close?
The woman is seen sprinting in front of Chew’s vehicle, blocking his path. Then another woman appears and tries to shoo the driver away. The first woman is seen claiming that her dad is soon arriving to use the space and that Chew should find somewhere else to park.
Their debate over whom the spot belongs to intensifies as time goes on and other vehicles begin to line up, thanks to the women’s antics.
“Are you serious!” the driver is heard saying. “You’re not even in a car, woman!” he shouts at her.
The women calls Chew unreasonable even though the dad’s white Jeep Compass is nowhere to be seen because it is in the next aisle.
“It was already about halfway through this video when their car finally made it to the spot and tried to come up real close to my car as if it was going to intimidate me to leave,” said Chew in a post to his Facebook account. “I’m sure we’ve all had our share of standing in spots hoping to save it for someone, but if another car gets there first, we don’t act like little entitled children like these two here.”
He said that the dad’s Jeep Compass “tried to come up real close to my car as if it was going to intimidate me to leave.”
Chew finally gave up because he felt bad for the line of cars behind him, and a bystander who was leaving offered him her soon-to-be-empty spot.
“And the lady who ended up giving me her spot to end this, you the real MVP, thank you,” he said.
