Woman screams 'I'm pregnant' before being fatally shot by Texas cop following physical altercation

A Texas woman who said she was pregnant was fatally shot by a police officer following a physical altercation Monday night.

The cop, an 11-year veteran of the Baytown Police Department, was patrolling an apartment complex in the east Houston suburb when he spotted 45-year-old Pamela Shantay Turner, who he knew had outstanding arrest warrants from previous encounters with her, CNN reports.

The officer, whose identity has not been released, then contacted Turner and attempted to arrest her, according to a police statement. When she resisted, the officer tasered her. As he struggled to handcuff her, Turner allegedly gained control of his taser and used it on him.

Cell phone footage of the incident shows Turner flailing her arms and exclaiming, "I'm pregnant!" before the officer fires multiple rounds at her, striking her at least once. Emergency responders pronounced her dead at the scene.

Baytown Police Lt. Steve Dorris said the Harris County District Attorney’s Office "is on scene and assisting in the investigation, as is normal in these types of incidents."

"Any future updates will be provided via an official press release later today, as the investigation unfolds," he added.

It remains unclear if Turner was actually pregnant at the time she was killed, but family members told KRPC that she has two children, both in their 20s, and three grandchildren.

Her sister, Antoinette, also told the station that Turner was on medication for schizophrenia.

Neighbors who were familiar with Turner said she was "not a bad person" and she would "just walk around, smoke her cigarettes and walk her dog."

"She would walk her dog. That’s all she did was walk her dog and pick up trash," resident Jonathan Little told KRPC. "She didn’t mess with anybody. It was just her and her dog."
