Woman Gets Tattoo of Her Cat With Ink Made His Fur

A new Swiss company called SKIN46 created a way to design a tattoo using the hair of a loved one or the fur of a pet, and a woman got one made from her cat.

Getting a tattoo to commemorate something — or someone — you love is nothing new. But getting a tattoo using ink that's literally made out of the DNA of that someone/something you love? Welcome to the body art of the future.

Model Makani Terror was one of the first people in the world to test out this revolutionary (and albeit a little outlandish) new tech, and got an enormous tattoo of her cat, Gizmo, on her leg using ink made out of Gizmo's fur.

Just take a second to let that set in.

Terror got inked last year by artist Roman Abrego at Artistic Element Tattoo in Yucaipa, California, and the photos are starting to make the rounds on Instagram. The tattoo is undeniably gorgeous, but obviously, the methods have raised a whole lot of questions, from "WTF?" to, most importantly, "Is this safe?"

According to SKIN46, the Swiss company behind what it's calling LOVE INK, the product is "safe for all those involved from start to finish." The ink is made from carbon extracts that are taken from "human and/or animal material" and then mixed with regular tattoo ink.

If you're interested in trying the process for yourself, all you have to do is send five grams of hair (or if you're a proud cat or dog mom, like Terror, fur) to SKIN46, and the company will send you back a clear carbon extract that's been medically removed from the "material." Hand it over to your tattoo artist and let them work their magic.

To be clear, the team behind SKIN46 is fully aware that what it's doing may raise some eyebrows. "The idea of SKIN46 tattoo ink starts some seriously spirited conversations," Andreas Wample, the brand's inventor and founder, said in a press release. "Some think it's offensive, while a huge amount of tattoo lovers thinks it's an amazing concept...Tattooing needs this kind of fresh spirit." Indeed, Andrew. Indeed.
