Woman attempts to make up for missed time by trying to go on 52 first dates: 'It was just really beautiful'

A 24-year-old New York City woman tried to make up for time lost during her months-long quarantine by going on 52 speed dates, the New York Post reports.

On June 24, Michaela Farrell, of Brooklyn, set up a small table at Fort Greene Park with a sign that read, “Do you miss dates? I sure as hell do! Recently I realized I have not been on a date in one year. In honor of PRIDE, I am attempting to make up for 52 dateless weekends by going on 52 speed dates TODAY!”

Farrell, a puppeteer and an ensemble member of the theater group New York Neo-Futurists, told the newspaper she also used the opportunity to “explore ways of creative expression,” given the fact that most entertainment venues in the city are closed amid a global health crisis.

“I’m trying to find safe ways to make live performance,” she said. “Is a date performance?”

Yet, the 24-year-old was quick to point out that she was not in character during speed-dating sessions and that she was, in fact, looking for love. By the end of the day, she had gone on 36 dates out of the 52 she had hoped for— still a whopping number in a single sitting.

“It was just really beautiful,” she recalled. “Looking into the eyes of someone you don’t know — when was the last time you did that? It’s very special.”

Farrell admitted not everyone who dropped by was looking for a relationship, but she still had a good time.

“It meant more to me to sit down and talk to people and connect with an individual who I didn’t know,” she admitted. “A date could be a lot of things, the cool thing is learning about new people.”

At least two people, however, did — one of whom said they would follow Farrell on Instagram.

“There was nothing like, there’s going to be a second date,” she told the Post. “It just reminded me of how much this city is built off of the little random connections and the random moments you have throughout your day.”
