Wolverhampton Wanderers and Manchester United played out a 0-0 draw at Molineux in the FA Cup third round.
In a first half lacking chances Matt Doherty came closest with a close range volley that was saved. The second half came to life with Marcus Rashford hitting the crossbar and Doherty having a goal ruled out by VAR for handball. Raul Jimenez also came close, striking the post for the home side.
Neither side were able to find a winner, meaning the two will meet again in a replay at Old Trafford.
Coming into the game Manchester United hadn’t beaten Wolves in any competition since 2012, and it was the home side with the first chance of the game after 13 minutes.
Following a series of corners the ball fell kindly to Matt Doherty who produced a stunning reaction save out of United goalkeeper Sergio Romero.
In a first half lacking chances of any note, Doherty’s effort was the only shot on target, as both sides battled for possession in the middle of the park, with Wolves looking to catch their opponents on the break through Adama Traore.
With 30 minutes played United felt they should have had a penalty. Brandon Williams looked to have been fouled in the penalty area after a loose touch by Leander Dendoncker, but the VAR official checked the decision and decided not to award a spot-kick.
United looked the more likely to score in the first half but neither side had created much. Daniel James made his way into the penalty area but dragged his shot wide when well placed.
0-0 the score at half time.
Wolves started the second half as the brighter side. Just six minutes played and Pedro Neto made space for a low shot that was well saved by Romero.
Manchester United were inches away from taking the lead with just under an hour played. Juan Mata’s whipped free kick was narrowly wide of the far post, with Wolves goalkeeper bizarrely moving to the opposite side of his goal.
The away side brought on Marcus Rashford with 20 minutes to go and United’s top scorer this season almost made an instant impact. 27 second into his appearance the England international struck the crossbar with a deflected shot.
Wolves thought they had opened the scoring on 76 minutes when Doherty headed in from close range, but the defender mistimed his effort and struck his own arm with the ball, meaning the goal was ruled out by a VAR review and the score remained 0-0.
As both sides pushed for a winner to avoid a replay, Jimenez was next to come close when the Mexican striker struck the United post from a tight angle.
Neither side were able to find a winner in the closing stages of the game and the match finished 0-0.
The two sides will now have to play a replay to decide who will be in the hat for the fourth round of the competition.
