Award winning author of the Wolf Hall trilogy, Dame Hilary Mantel, has died aged 70, her publisher HarperCollins has confirmed.

Known to be one of the greatest English novelists of the century, Mantel had won the Booker Prize twice, for Wolf Hall (the first in the Thomas Cromwell series) and its sequel, Bring Up the Bodies. The Mirror and the Light was the last book in the trilogy, published in 2020 and became a number one fiction best-seller as well as being long-listed for yet another Booker Prize in 2020.

In a statement, Mantel's publisher HarperCollins said: "We are heartbroken at the death of our beloved author, Dame Hilary Mantel. Our thoughts are with her friends and family, especially her husband, Gerald.

"This is a devastating loss and we can only be grateful she left us with such a magnificent body of work."

Ben Hamilton, who was Mantel’s agent throughout her career, praised the writer and said it was “the greatest privilege” to work with her. “Her wit, stylistic daring, creative ambition and phenomenal historical insight mark her out as one of the greatest novelists of our time," Hamilton added.

Over on social media, Mantel's fans shared messages of shock and condolence. "What an incredible loss, one of our truly innovative and inspirational writers and a great exponent of one of my favourite genres, historical fiction. RIP", tweeted one person, with another fan adding: "Really sorry to hear of the death of Hilary Mantel. One of our greatest novelists. RIP."

"Such shocking and sad news about Hilary Mantel. Her name became synonymous with author dreams and goals. So sad when she had so much more to give", a third fan added to the conversation, as someone else wrote: "RIP Hilary Mantel. She was undeniably one of the greatest writers of this era. Few people leave behind such a glorious legacy. But that will be little comfort to the people who knew and loved her."

Our thoughts are with the Mantel family at this difficult time.
