Surprise! Anne Hathaway's reboot of The Witches is coming to HBO Max on October 22.
You've heard about this remake, I'm sure: News broke in January 2019 that Hathaway would be playing the Grand High Witch, a role made famous by Anjelica Huston in the 1990 film. A theatrical release of the movie was planned but canned because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Now it's hitting HBO Max for your streaming pleasure in just a few weeks. So get excited!
Based on the Roald Dahl book of the same name, The Witches tells the story of a young boy and his grandma (Jahzir Kadeem and Octavia Spencer in the remake) who stumble upon a group of child-hating witches at a hotel (run by Stanley Tucci). The witches have a plan to rid the world of children by turning them into mice, starting with Bruno. But will they succeed?
Watch the trailer for yourself, below. It's filled with just the kind of spooky-adjacent high jinks we live for this time of year:
The movie is narrated by Chris Rock and also features an appearance from Kristin Chenoweth in an unknown role. "The Grand High Witch was a total collaboration between costumes, hair and makeup, the writers, my dialect coach, the effects department, stunts, [director] Bob Zemeckis, and myself," says Anne Hathaway about her character, per People. "She is such a weirdo, so silly and over-the-top , and everyone had to work together to be on the same page so it felt big and entertaining but never too much."
On her role in the movie, Octavia Spencer tells People, “Grandma was such a fun character to play because of her personality, expansive knowledge of witches, and her compassion. She's just the type of person you want on your side if you have to battle witches!”
We can't wait to watch.
