Netflix announced a new prequel series to The Witcher, titled The Witcher: Blood Origin is in the works.
The show will focus on the origin of the first Witcher.
There's no premiere date yet, but the show will film in the U.K.
The streamer announced Monday that a six-part, live-action limited series is currently in the works, with its setting in the same universe as the current show. Titled The Witcher: Blood Origin, the prequel will travel 1,200 years prior to the events of Geralt of Rivia's journey, focusing on the beginnings of the first Witcher and a “‘conjunction of the spheres,’ when the worlds of monsters, men and elves merged to become one.”
1200 years before Geralt of Rivia, the worlds of monsters, men and elves merged into one, and the first Witcher came to be.

“As a lifelong fan of fantasy, I am beyond excited to tell the story The Witcher: Blood Origin,” executive producer/showrunner Declan de Barra said in a statement Monday about the upcoming series. “A question has been burning in my mind ever since I first read The Witcher books – What was the Elven world really like before the cataclysmic arrival of the humans? I’ve always been fascinated by the rise and fall of civilizations, how science, discovery, and culture flourish right before that fall.”
Executive producer Lauren Schmidt Hissrich added her excitement about the show’s new development, saying “it’s a challenge to explore and expand The Witcher universe… and we can’t wait to introduce fans to new characters and an original story that will enrich our magical, mythical world even more.”
As far as when will fans receive a premiere date for the new series—that’s to be determined by Netflix, as the show needs to film in the U.K. first. And if you’re already looking for some new Geralt of Rivia content, get ready, because the show’s upcoming second season (which will include some familiar and new faces) is planning to resume filming in August after the pandemic shut down production back in March.
Based on Andrzej Sapkowski’s book series of the same name, The Witcher follows Geralt (Cavill), a monster hunter whose destiny gets intertwined with a powerful sorceress and a young princess, and all must learn to navigate an evil world and find their places within it.
