Winning Powerball ticket sold in Washington County claimed by Williamsport resident

A $50,000 Powerball ticket sold May 9 in Washington County has been claimed by a man from Williamsport, according to Maryland Lottery officials Tuesday.

The 63-year-old contractor wishes to remain anonymous, Lottery officials said, which is allowed under Maryland law.

"I figure that somebody is going to win these jackpots and it’ll be one ticket that does it for them," the man told the Maryland Lottery. "That’s why I always have at least one ticket.”

The man bought the ticket from the Sheetz at 20723 National Pike, at Mapleville Road.

“I immediately checked the winning numbers and saw that I had five of the numbers including the Power Ball, a $50,000 win," he told the Maryland Lottery. “I didn’t expect that (relief), really. I thought that only tens of millions of dollars would bring that kind of feeling, but this $50,000 gives me a little cushion in life, and that meant much more than I expected.”

The winning numbers were 18, 30, 35, 52, and 56, with 5 for the Powerball. The Power Play multiplier was 2, according to a Maryland Lottery news release.

No one hit the major prize in that Powerball drawing.

The May 9 drawing resulted in 6,970 winners with prizes ranging from $4 to $50,000, according to the lottery release.

Maryland Lottery officials encourage winners to immediately sign the back of their tickets and keep them in a safe place. They have 182 days from the time of the drawing to claim their prize.

Prizes of more than $25,000 must be redeemed by mail or at the lottery headquarters in the Montgomery Park Business Center, 1800 Washington Blvd., Suite 330 in Baltimore, a news release states.
