In this week’s episode of the Facebook series Red Talk Table, co-hosts Jada Pinkett Smith, Adrienne-Banfield Norris (Jada’s mother), and Willow Smith (Jada’s daughter) had a deep conversation about vulnerability.

Since Red Talk Table launched in 2018, the Smith family has been open about their personal life on the show. Most notably, Jada and husband Will Smith, who have been married for more than 20 years, recently discussed their brief relationship break in 2015 following Jada’s “entanglement” with musician August Alsina.

In this week’s episode, Jada explained that the most vulnerable she’d been was when she brought Will on the show in July. Their conversations about their marriage and Jada’s past relations with August quickly made headlines.

“It was a very personal journey that became public,” Jada said.

In response to her mom’s vulnerability, Willow said that she was really inspired by her parents and their ability to work through their marriage problems for the world to see on RTT.

“I want to put it on the table [that] I’m so proud of you. To be able to see you and dad do that, for me, that was like, ‘OK that’s real deal,’” Willow told her mom. “That’s real love. For you to be like, ‘I’m with you. I’m going to stand by you, and I’m going to hold your hand because I love you.’ That’s really important.”

In July, Jada and Will said they wanted to address rumors that Jada was dating August straight on, even though it is a “personal” matter. “There’s healing that needs to happen,” Jada said on Red Talk Table. “There’s a lot of stuff going on in the world right now. Even though this is minuscule, I do feel like it’s these kinds of things that create the world that we’re in. And the idea of not communicating, not talking about it ... and just being transparent.”

“I’m here with you,” Will told his wife of two decades.

The Smiths shared that the relationship between Jada and August happened during a brief break from their marriage in 2015. “It all started with him just needing some help. Me wanting to help his health, his mental state,” Jada said, adding that August was initially just a friend. “From there you and I were going through a difficult time. We basically... we broke up.”

“We decided we were going to separate for a period of time, and you go figure out how you make yourself happy, and I go make myself happy,” Will added.

In the end the two were able to mend their relationship. “Through that particular journey I learned so much about myself and was able to really confront a lot of emotional immaturity, emotional insecurity, and I was really able to do some really deep healing,” Jada said.
