Wild Wanderers Club kicks off at Potter Park Zoo

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS)– Things are getting wild at Potter Park Zoo with a new Wild Wanderers Club and new wild animal.

Potter Park Zoo is home to 300 animals, including a new healthy ring-tailed lemur that was born on Sunday, with the new Wild Wanderers Club kicking off Wednesday morning.

“So, as you know, here at the zoo, we really appreciate wild space and wildlife and we know just how good it is to get out in nature and experience those things,” Heath Thurman, Communications Specialist at Potter Park Zoo said.

Thurman said their first club meeting was a success! They had nearly 40 club members join them for a morning stroll through the zoo.

According to Thurman, it was inspiring to see individuals from all walks of life, including stay-at-home parents, working professionals, and retirees- come together for this event.

“We really wanted to take this opportunity to introduce it into our community in a helpful way. Getting people fit and active and leaning more towards a healthier lifestyle was really important to us,” Thurman said.

Now, Thurman said the new ring-tailed lemur is not available for viewing during the Wild Wanderers stroll hours but can be seen later in the day.

This is the zoo’s third successful birth of this species, and right now the baby is actively nursing and can be seen clinging to its mother.

The breeding of ring-tailed lemurs at the zoo is recommended by officials because they face significant threats in the wild due to habitat loss from deforestation.

“So, the ring-tailed lemurs are endangered species. So being able to have our third successful birth year is a really big deal. Taking this opportunity to educate the public about the species, why they’re important, and why we should care is really the mission behind the zoo and I’m really excited to it to speak on the ringtone lemurs and show some cuteness.”

The Wild Wanders Club includes free admission to the zoo every day until Labor Day from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m.

And the ring-tailed lemur can be viewed anytime between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.
