The Norwegian fantasy drama, Ragnarok, has come to an end after three seasons. And while it isn’t quite the household name that Stranger Things is, it has kept viewers entertained since it premiered in 2020.

But could Ragnarok come back for a fourth season or even a spin-off movie or series like other Netflix fantasy hits, Shadow and Bone and The Witcher? Here’s what we know so far…

Will there be a season 4 of Ragnarok?

Earlier this year Netflix confirmed that the show would be returning for a third season, however, this would ultimately be the final chapter for the fantasy drama.

In an official statement at the time, the streaming platform revealed, “everything has led to this. As an epic final battle of gods against giants draws near, Magne's fortitude will face its ultimate trial.”

Thankfully the third season concluded with a satisfying ending, instead of leaving fans on a cliffhanger. Which is exactly what happened when some other Netflix shows, such as The Society and Santa Clarita Diet, were cancelled, leaving fans with unresolved storylines.

Given the logical ending to Ragnarok's three-season arc, it doesn’t make much sense to start a whole new story, at least with the characters from the existing eighteen episodes anyway.

However, there still could be the possibility of a spin-off, whether that be a feature length movie or a new series, in the future. Instead of continuing the main story, finding another character or characters within the vast expanse of Norse mythology could be a potential route for the show’s creators to take next.

As the production company, SAM Productions, is a Norwegian company, it is more likely that they would continue to explore Norse mythology rather than branching off into another story. But as of now, there are no plans for a fourth season or anything else Ragnarok related anytime soon.

What is Ragnarok about?

If you haven’t yet seen the modern twist on traditional Norse mythology, Ragnarok follows half-brothers Magne (David Stakston) and Laurits (Jonas Strand Gravli), who just so happen to be the incarnations of Thor and Loki.

It takes place in the present-day fictional Norwegian town of Edda, which is struggling with climate change and industrial pollution from the local factories, which are owned by the Jutul family.

This new take on the classic story documents the fight back against those that are destroying the town, in what is supposed to be the end of the days in Norse mythology.

All three seasons of Ragnarok are streaming on Netflix now.
