Why You Should Wait Until the Last Minute to Book Your New Year’s Eve Hotel Room

If you haven’t made New Year’s Eve plans yet, that's okay. According to hotel booking app HotelTonight, more hotel rooms will open up on the day of New Year’s Eve than a week before in many cities across the nation. And those who wait to book until the 31st could actually pay less.

Procrastinators in Los Angeles, New York City, Orange County, and San Diego will be able to bag the best deals on a hotel room on the morning or afternoon of the 31st. Those in Las Vegas should book their hotel on New Year’s Eve Eve (December 30) to get the best deal.

Travelers in other major cities will need a few days’ notice to book the cheapest last-minute rates in their cities. Those in Miami and Washington, D.C. should book their hotel rooms on December 29. In Boston and Chicago, that date is December 28 and people in San Francisco should book on December 27.

According to HotelTonight, Chicago is this year’s top New Year’s Eve destination, followed by Las Vegas, Nevada; San Francisco, California; Boston, Massachusetts; and New York City, New York.

In Chicago, consider the Freehand Chicago for a great value, The Talbott for a splurge, or the Hotel Felix for an especially hip New Year's. (Those heading to America’s second city should be aware that Chicago won’t host its annual free Chi-Town Rising festival this year.)

In Las Vegas, consider The Palazzo for luxury, or The Cosmopolitan for style. In San Francisco, Hotel Zelos is a solid choice, according to HotelTonight, while Hotel Nikko is a good choice for luxury.

Travelers looking for an up-and-coming destination to say goodbye to 2017 should head to Palm Springs, California, which is this year’s trendiest New Year's Eve destination.
