If a nonstop love affair with crystals, metal embellishments, and harsh gel manicures have left nail beds looking wrecked, the Fall 2018 runways were a welcome invitation for hands to take a much-needed step back. To accompany the sparkling chainmail frocks and larger-than-life 80's-inspired color schemes dominating shows from New York to Paris, designers reconsidered the allure of the refreshingly clean, well-groomed manicure.

According to nail whiz Deborah Lippmann, like any good detox, the au naturel manicure requires a few basic precepts. “It’s all about getting a really good base and a beautifully [refined] and healthy nail,” says Lippmann, who advises clients to first ensure nails are filed to the same length, shape, and size (she suggests a short, rounded finish). Next, buff the tops of the nails lightly until a shine appears and apply a cuticle remover to gently push back and remove excess dead skin. “It’s the easiest manicure ever.” From there, along with maintenance of once-a-day cuticle oil application and regular slatherings of hand cream—bonus points if the formula has SPF—it offers the ultimate laid-back, chip-free solution to pretty hands that speak volumes about the art of self-care.
