Here’s Why the Royal Baby Name Hasn’t Been Announced Yet

Kate Middleton and Prince William didn’t make us wait long from the announcement that Middleton was in labor with her third child to their standard post-birth photo op on the steps of the Lindo Wing. But when it comes to announcing their third baby’s name, the wait is longer than usual.

When the Duke and Duchess Cambridge welcomed 4-year-old Prince George and almost-3-year-old Princess Charlotte to the family, they announced their names two days after their births, leading royal watchers to believe that baby no. 3’s big name reveal would be on Wednesday. But the day came and went without any official announcement—proud dad Prince William, though, was out and about for an Anzac Day ceremony, and was even caught nodding off in church.

He even hinted about the baby’s “strong” name, without giving any further clues.

It turns out, the holiday itself, which honors fallen Australian and New Zealand veterans from WWI, might be part of the reason that the newborn prince’s name has yet to be revealed. His grandfather, Prince Charles, traveled to France to commemorate the holiday, and as of Wednesday hadn’t yet met his grandson.

The royal family, of course, is very traditional, and could be waiting for the future King of England to pop in for a visit before they share the new baby’s name with the world.

As of Thursday, Prince Charles is believed to be back in the U.K., so the visit to his son's Kensington Palace home must be soon. Middleton’s family has already visited the newborn, with parents Carole and Michael as well as siblings Pippa and James making trips to Kensington Palace to meet the new addition.

Of course, that’s not the only possible reason why the royal baby’s name has yet to be announced. Another option? It hasn’t yet been decided on. According to multiple royal reporters, Prince William replied, “I’m working on that,” when asked about his son’s name at an event Thursday night.

Perhaps the royal family is still having a bit of a disagreement over whether Arthur or James is the perfect name for the young prince.
