Why peers warned ABC correspondent not to come out as HIV-positive

Karl Schmid, an ABC on-camera reporter for a Los Angeles affiliate, came out as HIV-positive on Friday night in a powerful Facebook post. The 37-year-old Australian, who covers human interest stories and Hollywood news, came out with his diagnosis after a decade of staying quiet. Schmid said he revealed he was HIV-positive despite many of his industry peers telling him to keep it quiet. “For 10 years I’ve struggled with ‘do I or don’t I’? For ten years the stigma and industry professionals have said, ‘don’t! It’ll ruin you,’” wrote Schmid.
