Perhaps the “hot water with lemon” combo goes back ages ago, but for many of us, the first time we learned of this trend was when Samantha Jones ordered it over brunch as a weight loss enhancer on Sex and the City. Since then, many of us ladies have been starting our day off with a soothing yet tart cup of the stuff, because, much more than just a trend, the benefits of lemon water have proven to be many.

And if you’re coming off a rosé-heavy summer or wine-filled holiday season, lemon water—however over-hyped it may be—has merit. It’s also the easiest and cheapest way to kick-start your body’s detox.

A single glass of hot lemon water before breakfast can not only help you stay hydrated but may also improve digestion and regulate an overactive appetite. Charlotte’s Book Premier Provider Keri Glassman puts an emphasis on the hydration aspect: “Many people like the taste [of lemon] and if that gets you to drink water then that alone is positive,” she said.

Dana James, a triple board certified nutritionist and part of the Charlotte’s Book advisory board, says that the lemon water trend may be a bit “over-hyped,” but it absolutely does offer benefits: “What it does do is increase detoxification because the bitterness of the lemon activates the bile flow, [which] helps emulsify and remove fat soluble toxins.” James also goes on to say that there is “no reason not to be doing it.”

Meredith Geller adds, “Lemons encourage cleansing of the digestive tract with its sour taste, which increases digestive fire and helps stimulate the bowels, moving waste out of the digestive system.”

So start stocking up on those lemons. And don’t forget this simple trick for making it.
