Why King Charles III and Camilla Parker-Bowles have shut down their social media

At the start of Queen Elizabeth II's reign, the invention of the internet was still decades away. However, in the modern day, we've grown accustomed to seeing the Royal Family online – and in particular, on social media.
But there's a big change underway in the social world, as King Charles III and Camilla Parker-Bowles have shut down their famous Clarence House account. "This account is no longer being updated," the bio of the pair's former Instagram account reads.
Royal fans should fear not, though, as the newly-appointed King and his Queen Consort haven't ditched social media altogether. Instead, you can now keep up with all their royal goings on over on the official Royal Family social accounts.
"Please follow @theroyalfamily for updates on His Majesty King Charles III and Her Majesty The Queen Consort," the bio on the now-defunct Clarence House account reads.
The last ever post on the Clarence House account was an announcement of Her Majesty's death. "The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon," the caption of the post said, alongside a black-and-white photo of a smiling Queen Elizabeth II.
What was the Clarence House account used for?
The Clarence House social media account allowed royals fans to follow what Charles and Camilla were up to. The pair – or rather their social media team – posted a variety of content, from photos with celebrities like Paul O'Grady to celebrations of the EUFA Women's Euros.
Some of the most-liked photos on the account were of candid family moments that we so often miss. In 2020, a photo of Prince Louis and the now-King Charles III sharing a hug racked up almost 300k likes, whilst a heartwarming photo from Princess Beatrice's wedding totted up 133.8k likes.
The Royal Family on social media
At the time of being shut down, the Clarence House Instagram account had 1.7 million followers – compared to Prince William and Kate Middleton's account which has 14.3 million followers and the Royal Family account which has amassed 12.8 million followers.
Other royals on social media include Princesses Eugenie and Beatrice as well as Zara Tindall. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are no longer on social media, since their departure from life as senior working royals in 2020.
