Brooks Koepka’s secret to success on golf’s biggest stages: Keep it simple and just play golf.
“The only thing I am interested in is going out there and playing golf,” Koepka tells Yahoo Finance at this week’s kickoff to the FedEx Cup at the 2019 Northern Trust at Liberty National Golf Club in New Jersey. “Everybody else freaks themselves out, and I just go out there and play golf.”
And Koepka has certainly played some golf this year — damn near perfect golf. Koepka, known for his steely demeanor and booming drives on the course, has entered 18 events and made the cut in 17. He has three wins on the year, including another major championship at this year’s PGA Championship.
Koepka, 29, is a four-time major championship winner. He has hauled in a cool $9.5 million this year alone. That total was recently boosted by Koepka winning $1 million by capturing this year’s Aon Risk Reward Challenge last week. The yearlong contest rewards players for hitting the best shots on the course week after week.
The No. 1 ranked player in the world also holds that position in the FedEx Cup standings. If he were to win the FedEx Cup — a yearlong buildup that commences with a three tourney stretch where the winner gets $15 million — it would cap another remarkable year for Koepka.
As for what Koepka would do with $15 million? Well, he tells Yahoo Finance he is building a house — so no doubt that would be a nice chunk of change for a killer in-ground pool.
