Why 'Call the Midwife' Should Be Your Next Netflix Marathon

If you’re always on the hunt for a new British drama and your to-watch queue is currently looking a little bare, let us point you to Call the Midwife, a series with a mix of humor and heart that’s set in 1950s London.

According to Netflix, “This period drama set in impoverished East London in the 1950s follows a newly qualified midwife and her colleagues at a nursing convent.” It’s about friendship, motherhood, and the highs and lows of social change, and it’s based on the best-selling memoir Call the Midwife: A True Story of the East End in the 1950s by Jennifer Worth, the first in a trilogy about her work as a nurse and midwife in London in the middle of the 20th century.

The series premiered in 2012 and opens as newly minted midwife Jenny Lee arrives in Poplar, a town in London’s East End, to join Nonnatus House, the headquarters for a group of nurses who are also nuns. In her new position, she encounters challenges that test her fortitude and relationships that lift her spirit. Call the Midwife was created by Heidi Thomas and stars Jenny Agutter, Linda Bassett, Helen George, Miranda Hart, Bryony Hannah, Laura Main, Stephen McGann, Judy Parfitt, Cliff Parisi, Jessica Raine, and Vanessa Redgrave.
